Corn Capital of Canada

Taber, Alberta is listed on Wikipedia as the Corn Capital of Canada. Ask any Albertan and they will likely tell you it’s true. Nothing beats Taber Corn.

Taber corn

welcome sign in the Town of Taber, AlbertaAccording to the Jensen family which has been growing corn in the Taber area for 25 years, super sweet corn grown here is five times sweeter than regular corn-on-the-cob. Apparently, it’s the amount of sunshine in this part of the Canadian Badlands combined with cool summer nights that gives Taber Corn its extra sweetness.

Taber Corn is so popular in Alberta that last year an Edmonton Sun article warned readers to be aware that Taber Corn knock-offs were being sold ahead of the real thing.

So if you want to be absolutely certain you’re eating the real stuff, head to the Taber Cornfest, August 26-27, 2011. All the Taber Corn-on-the-cob you can eat is freshly-picked, cooked to perfection and served at the fest. Other corn-related activities include chili and cornbread cook-offs, a corn-eating competition and a best-tasting corn contest. Then there’s the corn-stuffing competition which always draws a big crowd. That’s where teams stuff each other’s overalls with cobs. The first stuffed pair of overalls to waddle across the finish line wins.

Beyond corn, there’s all the things you would expect at an annual harvest festival – a big midway, pancake breakfasts, street performers, live entertainment on a festival stage and plenty more.

corn-on-the-cobThe Taber Cornfest takes place at Confederation Park at the corner of 50 Street and 50 Avenue in Taber. There is also a shuttle service that runs every 30 minutes from 11 am – 11 pm. Pick up and drop off locations are at St Mary’s and WR Myer High Schools.

Taber’s Super 8 and Heritage Inn offer accommodation while the Municipal District of Taber Park is a great spot to camp. It’s located just 3.2 km or two miles north of town off of Highway 865 and offers a full list of amenities including electrical hook-ups and pay showers.

I am reading about badlands in Taber, is that true? Further down I read that there are Alberta’s best crops grown. What has that to do with badlands?
